Jerusalem Hymn – Lyrics

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England’s mountains green?
And was the Holy Lamb of God
On England’s pleasant pastures seen?
And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem built here
Among those dark Satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold
Bring me my arrows of desire
Bring me my spear, o clouds unfold
Bring me my chariots of fire
I will not cease from metal fight
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
‘Til we have built Jerusalem
In England’s green and pleasant land
…….Amen…………..

Fifth Continent
The ultimate hymn to all things British. Never fails to move us.

“Chariots of Fire,” the film, is where I fell in love with this song. I loved teaching it to my music students in a British school overseas. “I will not cease from mental fight, nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, ’til we have built Jerusalem, in England’s green and pleasant land.” What a wonderful sentiment in the inspiring poem by Blake put to beautiful music by Parry.

The hymn is not saying that the historical city of Jerusalem is in Great Britain. It is referring to the “New Jerusalem” which is a metaphor for “Heaven” or “The Kingdom.” Basically the hymn, which was written during the rise of the Industrial Age ( think of the bleak conditions depicted in Dickens and similar writers of the day), is calling for the building of “The Kingdom” through Christian works of mercy and government reforms.

this is my old school song. I love it. That’s one joke Ill always have with my former classmates… that we used to love this one hymn at chapel. It makes me emotional.
